April 2011

Dear SITA Members,
Summer approaches! April showers hopefully mark the beginning of four months of sun, which means lots of tennis on all of our wonderful outdoor courts! There are several exciting events coming up soon, so please read carefully and barring that, get out your racquets and get outside!

South Island Indoor Challenge

Over Easter weekend, the South Island Indoor Challenge main draw was completed, featuring some fantastic tennis and concluding with the crowning of a new champion. Clement Reix defeated last years champion Nima Roshan 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 in one of the best matches of the tournament. Some other highlights include Henry Choi of Vancouver beating #1 seed Rik de Voest in the first round before losing an incredible match to local star Nick Coutts. Nima Roshan also had an impressive quarterfinal win over Oren Motevassel, who he defeated 7-6, 6-7, 7-5. Motevassel is 42 years old and is considered a somewhat of a legend in the United States, and despite his age defeated local star Patrick Flint in the first round before pushing last years champion Nima in his quarterfinal match. All in all, it was a fantastic weekend, and many of the matches were taped and will soon be available on Youtube. For full results and to see some photos, check out islandtennis.net.
