Junior Bursary – DEADLINE for application MARCH 31, 2011

SITA would like to remind all juniors that they are accepting applications for the junior grant this year. The grant is designed to offset the cost of training and playing in tournaments for all levels of players. Any grant applicants are required to perform some volunteer hours for the Vancouver Island tennis community before receiving any funding. Applications are due by March 31st, 2011. For more details check out the SITA website. Select the "Junior" tab at the top of the page and scroll down to the "Junior Bursary Program" section.

South Island Indoor Challenge

Last year SITA was proud to sponsor Cedar Hill in hosting the wildly successful South Island Indoor Challenge, and this year we are happy to announce that we are acting as a Silver Sponsor! The tournament featured some great tennis from players outside Victoria, and local players held their own in the qualification and main draws. The tournament will be held again this year from April 13-24, and the prize money has been increased to $15,000. For more details, contact Dean Gillis at dean.gillis@saanich.ca or at 250-475-7126. You can also check out the webpage at islandtennis.net.

OBTC CENTENNIAL

This year, 2011, marks the 100th year since the founding of the Oak Bay Tennis Club, making it one of the oldest continually active recreational facilities in the Greater Victoria area. While the location continues to be on Bowker Avenue, the membership has now grown substantially to over 500 senior and 130 junior members.

A newly designed centenary Club logo and a number of special events are scheduled over the year to highlight the Club as an athletic institution in the Municipality of Oak Bay.

In memory…

Smith, Douglas Patrick- passed away peacefully on February 5, 2011. Doug was a long-time member and past-president of the Saanich Tennis Club and a major contributor to club activities – from repairing cranky ball machines to organizing tennis tournaments to coordinating indoor winter schedules. His commitment, contributions and sheer enjoyment of the game will be sorely missed by his fellow tennis players.

Norbury, Horace Linton "Lyn " - December 22nd, 1920 February 5th, 2011 Passed away peacefully at home in Victoria. Lyn was an avid sportsman, but his passion was tennis. He was an honorary member of the Oak Bay, Saanich and Esquimalt Tennis Clubs for many years. Lyn loved to travel and on one of his many adventures, cruised up the Amazon only to discover at the end, a grass tennis court and he without a tennis racket. A celebration of Lyn's life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation
