Dear SITA Members,
Summer has finally arrived (to be fair, it was very late this year) and hopefully you've had the chance to get outside and soak in some of that long awaited sun on the tennis court. This will be our last newsletter until September, so please take careful notice of the important events and tournaments that are taking place over the summer!

Love tennis and have some time?
SITA is looking for new volunteers who are passionate about tennis and willing to commit one evening each month (only for nine months) to attend board meetings and provide input on matters in which SITA is involved. For those people who are especially interested, there will be opportunities during the year to take on other projects that are related to tennis in the South Island. SITA is proud to have contributed to developing tennis at all levels entirely through the efforts of volunteers. If you feel moved to become a part of our passionate organization, please contact Mike Wyeth at mike.wyeth@gmail.com
SITA would like to thank those people who $133 to SITA during the South Island Challenge. SITA appreciates any and all contributions to its Junior funds as we continue to support Junior development on the southern part of the island.
Also, we will soon be awarding the junior grants to those people who successfully applied this year. Thanks again to all our applicants, and congratulations to our very deserving recipients!
Finally, the BC High School Tennis Championships recently took place, with the lower island being represented by its undefeated champion the Claremont Spartans. The Spartans had a perfect record in the lower islands and ended up coming 6th at the Provincial Championships, one of the best finishes by an island school in recent years.
Thank you to all those people who recently attended the Power to Be Rally at Panorama Rec Centre. A grand total of $8,000 was raised for the charity, which is a fantastic accomplishment that all participants can be proud of.

SITA is pleased to announce that this year will mark the return of the South Island Singles Championships to crown the top players in the lower island.
The tournament will be held at Stadacona Park and the James Bay courts from August 30th to September 4th.
Yes, this is a long way away but it will be one of the biggest tournaments of the summer and carries with it bragging rights for the rest of the year, so clear your schedule now to make space for an awesome week of tennis!
SITA would love to hear from you, dear readers. We would like to know about your tennis experiences in Victoria, and from around the world. Have you found any problems on courts in Victoria recently? Tell us about it. What about playing on a new or unique surface somewhere else in the world? What country were you in, and what was the tennis facility called? Where would you recommend people go to play if they happened to be in another country you just visited? Please tell us al about your experiences, and we'll publish some in every newsletter starting in the fall.
Having just watched the Wimbledon final for this year, I thought back to a much better final from 2008 between Federer and Nadal. Often called the Greatest Match Ever Played, it was immortalized through Youtube and has over 20 minutes of highlight video (20 MINUTES!! THAT'S HOW AMAZING IT WAS!) For your viewing pleasure, I have attached link below for you to view the first part of it.

Dear Tennis Players,
Leaving your Tennis racquet in your car is not a good idea, especially in hot weather. When a racquet is exposed to heat, strings will lose tension faster. Even on an overcast summer day, the heat inside the car or trunk can act like an oven and is high enough to affect your strings.
At higher temperatures, molecules move more easily relative to each other, so the creep curve is accelerated and this results in greater tension loss. In addition, allowing your racquet to get extremely cold and then warm up again can also cause changes in your string's performance.
If you have to leave your racquet in the car, for an extended period of time, make sure it's not exposed to direct sunlight. Keep it in the dark trunk, underneath a thick blanket or better yet, use one of the new racquet bags with silver lined, thermo-controlled insulated compartments to protect your frames and strings against extreme temperature fluctuations.
Sincerely,
Al Klieber
